FRISCO, Texas – For a fourth consecutive year Stephen F. Austin athletics claimed at least one of the three potential Southland Conference all-sports trophies by securing the top spot in the men’s all-sports standings.
SFA (57 points) edged Sam Houston State (54 points) by three points to win their third-ever men’s all-sports trophy and were just six points shy of claiming its second consecutive Commissioner’s Cup and third in the last four years.
The SFA athletics program was equally impressive in 2012-13 as the men’s and women’s programs combined to win seven conference championships. The Lumberjacks claimed titles in basketball, the first since the 2008-09 seasons, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The women, who finished in second for the women’s all-sports trophy, won cross country and swept the indoor and outdoor track and field titles for a fifth consecutive season. The Ladyjacks soccer team also won the regular season championship going undefeated for a second-straight year.
The Commissioner’s Cup is awarded to the university compiling the highest combined total of men’s and women’s all-sports points. The SLC All-Sports trophies are awarded annually for men’s and women’s competition based on a 10-point system for all conference sports. Point values are 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1, pending place of finish. Regular-season standings are used for sports that have a conference tournament.
