FRISCO, Texas -
Stephen F. Austin is among the top five schools in the Southland Conference on the Spring 2009 SLC Commissioner's Honor Roll, announced earlier this week by league officials. Led by 28 honorees from the women's track and field team, including 2009 SLC Student-Athlete of the Year Amy Shackelford, SFA landed 80 selections in all.
Shackelford, a sophomore kinesiology major is one of 15 Lumberjack and Ladyjack athletes to earn a 4.0 GPA in the spring semester. She won individual titles in the 10,000 and 5,000 meters at the SLC Outdoor Championships, helping lead her team to the crown, its second of the spring. The Ladyjacks also won the SLC Indoor Championships. Joining Shackelford on the list of 4.0 averages are freshmen Danielle Burchett, Stephanie Ganter, Carrie Hahn and Macy Wade.
The SFA baseball and softball teams were second only to women's track, landing 12 spots each on the Honor Roll. Seniors Adam Bosley, Zach Gardner and Erich Lehmann, along with freshman Jarid Scarafiotti, earned 4.0 averages for the baseball team. Senior biology major Kari Hugie, a three-time Academic All-SLC honoree, earned the lone perfect GPA on the softball squad.
Men's track and field and women's tennis each posted eight selections to the honor roll. Junior Keith Mahipala earned a 4.0 in his biology major last semester and was named to the Academic All-SLC team. The Ladyjack tennis team's eight selections make it SFA's only sport to put every single player from its spring roster on the honor roll. The list includes 4.0 GPAs from senior and Academic All-SLC honoree Gabriela Gadeva, juniors Tatiana Smolnikova and Jamie Williams, and freshman Alina Shazhko.
The Ladyjack and Lumberjack basketball teams posted five and four selections, respectively, to the honor roll. The Lumberjack golf team rounded out SFA's 80 honorees with three selections.
