Top 25 Moments of 2012-13 - No. 12
July 10, 2013
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Now that the school year is over, and before we begin the 2013-14 academic year, SFA athletics wanted to take a look back at the Top 25 Moments from the 2012-13 season.
No. 12Moment No. 12 on the SFA Top 25 Moments of 2012-13 takes us to men's golf, and one of the best rounds by a Lumberjack in program history. Stephen F. Austin senior Mitchell McLeroy fired an eight-under par 136 on the opening day of the 2012 Lumberjack Crown Classic to take a lead into the final day of competition.
As a team, the Lumberjacks fired a six-over 582 to take a commanding 12-stroke lead into the final day of action on the par 72, Crown Colony Country Club course, but the biggest headline belonged to McLeroy. After firing a one-under 71 in the opening round, McLeroy dominated the field in the second round. He carded a seven-under 65 to take a commanding lead heading into the final round of action. He posted the 65 despite recording a bogey on the final hole.
McLeroy's career-low round was more than just a personal best, it was one of the best rounds in program history. The 65 tied for the second-lowest round by a Lumberjack, bested only by Trevor Sauntry's 62 in 2002. It was also just the third round of at least a 65 at SFA since 1996.
McLeroy would fire a two-under in the final round to take the Crown Classic individual title with a 71-65-70 - 206, and SFA won the team title with an 18-over 882. It was one of six top-10 finishes, and one of two individual titles in 2012-13 for McLeroy, who advanced to the NCAA Regionals for a second consecutive season.
