MANY, La. - After an opening-round 305 that left them in a tie for last place, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golfers shot a 302 Tuesday in the second round of the Battle on the Bend to move into ninth place in the 13-team field. Senior Brian Grossman led the surge with a team-low round of 72, which put him in a tie for 16th in the individual standings.

Four other Lumberjacks joined Grossman in the 70s. Sophomore Chad Spencer carded a 74, freshman Josh Irving shot a 77 and freshman Jonathan Porter turned in a 79. Jason Landry shot an 80 in Round 2.

SFA finished Monday's opening round tied with Texas-Pan American in 13th place. Grossman opened with a 75, and Spencer shot a 76. Landry and Irving each carded 77s, and Porter shot an 80.

The Lumberjacks head into Wednesday's final round one stroke back of seventh-place teams Nicholls State and Houston and hold a four-shot lead over Southland Conference rival Texas State. The University of New Orleans leads the tournament by one stroke over Rice after two rounds. The Battle on the Bend is hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette.
