Ladyjacks Dominate Bearkats, 89-59

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin raced out to a 20-point lead midway through the opening half and never looked back, dominating rival Sam Houston State 89-59 at William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Ladyjacks notch their fifth-straight victory, improving to 8-6 on the year and 2-0 in Southland Conference play. Sam Houston State (5-8, 0-2) never led in the contest.
Four Ladyjacks scored in double figures, led by 18 points from Porsha Roberts, who added six rebounds and three steals. Brittney Matthew notched 16 points for SFA while dishing out a game-high five assists. Tierany Henderson recorded her second straight double-double, posting 12 points and 10 rebounds, with Daylyn Harris adding 10 points.
The victory over the Bearkats gives the Ladyjacks their first five-game winning streak since posting five consecutive victories from Feb. 11-25, 2012.
SFA's defense limited Sam Houston State's to just 19 points in the first half, the fewest allowed by the Ladyjacks to open a contest this season. The Bearkats shot only 29.6 percent in the opening stanza and attempted just one free throw.
The Ladyjacks dominated inside the paint again on Saturday, outscoring Sam Houston State 30-16 in that category.
Free throws played a big role on Saturday again as the Ladyjacks made and attempted the most on the season. SFA was 32-of-41 at the free-throw line while Sam Houston State was 16-of-18 after only attempting one free three in the first half.
SFA concludes its five-game homestand 5-0 and will now hit the road for its next five contests. Up next for the Ladyjacks will be the Houston Baptist Huskies on Thursday night before traveling to face the Islanders of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday.
