CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Tierany Henderson and Porsha Roberts each scored a game-high 17 points and Antionette Carter added 12 points as well to help the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks earn their first Southland Conference victory of the season, defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 66-47 Monday evening at the American Bank Center.
SFA (6-8, 1-2) shot a season-best 49 percent from the field, connecting on 24-of-49 attempts which included 5-of-14 (36%) from three-point territory. The Ladyjacks moved to 4-0 on the season when they allowed 60 points or less to their opponents.
The Islanders (1-12, 0-2) were limited to just 33 percent shooting from the field for the game and made just one three-pointer in 10 attempts. SFA beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on the boards, 40-32 which included a 31-17 advantage on the defensive boards. Brandi Huff led the Islanders with 15 points while Jessica Jammer had 10 points.
The Ladyjacks wasted no time building a sizeable first half lead, connecting on eight of their first 13 shots (62%) from the field on their way to a 20-8 lead over the game's first 11 minutes. During that stretch, Henderson made three of her four first half three-pointers en route to a game and season-high 14 points.
SFA led the entire first half and pushed the lead to 33-15 entering halftime, the largest lead of the first 20 minutes. As a team the Ladyjacks shot 57 percent (13-of-23) from the floor while the Islanders made just 6-of-26 attempts (23 percent). SFA also dominated the battle of the boards (22-10) and held the Islanders without a made three-point attempt.
In the second half the Ladyjacks outscored the Islanders 33-32 and went 10-of-10 from the free throw line over the final 20 minutes.
The Ladyjacks will now have two days off before they return to action on Thursday, Jan. 10 when they face Central Arkansas in Conway, Ark. That game will be broadcast on Q107.7 FM at 5:30 p.m.
