Roberts' Double-Double Not Enough at ORU
Jan. 23, 2014
TULSA, Okla. – Porsha Roberts posted her sixth game of the season with at least 20 points while posting her fifth double-double, but it was not enough Thursday night as the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks fell on the road to Oral Roberts by the final score of 64-55. SFA dominated the glass again but could not come away with the road victory for the second straight game after out-rebounding its opponent.
SFA (10-8, 4-2 SLC) got the double-double from Roberts with 21 points and 10 rebounds, and saw Antionette Carter crash the boards for nine rebounds, but no other Ladyjack would score in double digits. Roberts was 6-of-13 from the field and hit 9-of-12 on free throws.
Oral Roberts (4-12, 3-3) was led by Christian Key with 24 points. The guard hit 9-of-14 overall and was 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Dorottya Balla joined key in double digits with 10 points on the night as ORU shot 46.4 percent in the win.
SFA jumped on the Golden Eagles quickly thanks to a number of turnovers by ORU. The Ladyjacks built their first-half lead up to as many as eight points after a 3-pointer by Brentney Branch, but Oral Roberts went to its main scoring threat to chip away at the lead and eventually take a 24-23 lead thanks to sharp shooting from Key.
Key tallied 15 of her 24 points in the first half and represented 41 percent of ORU’s offense in the opening stanza.
The Ladyjacks struggled inside with the Golden Eagles contesting buckets inside the paint and jamming the lane. SFA did pull down 12 offensive rebounds, converting five of them into points, but it was not enough to narrow the gap more heading into the break as Oral Roberts led 37-31 at half.
In the second half, ORU extended the lead to 10 points just five minutes in, but the Ladyjacks responded with six straight points from Roberts to cut the lead to four points. The lead was narrowed to three points after a 3-pointer by Tierany Henderson, but a 4-0 run by ORU quickly put SFA back in a corner.
SFA could not quite complete the comeback as ORU had an answer after each Ladyjack run. In the closing minutes SFA would have to foul and put ORU at the free-throw line, and the Golden Eagles would hold off the rally by the Ladyjacks.
With the loss, SFA falls to 4-2 in conference play and will conclude its five-game road stint on Saturday when they travel to take on the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears at 2 p.m.
