LAKE CHARLES, La. - Despite rallying from a 15-point first half deficit to take a lead late in the second half, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks were unable to hang on and fell 66-60 to the McNeese State Cowgirls Wednesday evening at the Civic Center.

Sophomore center Porsha Roberts scored a team-high 21 points for SFA (9-11, 4-5) in defeat and was helped in the scoring department by senior guard Ashlee Mells and junior forward Annette Davis, each of whom scored 10 points apiece off the bench.

However the Ladyjacks were unable to slow freshman Allison Baggett, who scored a career-high 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting, including a clutch three-pointer with 42 seconds remaining to give the Cowgirls a 62-57 lead. The other two Baggett sisters (Caitlyn and Ashlyn) scored a combined 21 points but shot just 7-of-28 from the field, doing most of their damage at the free throw line where they converted on 16-of-18 attempts.

The Ladyjacks bounced back from a rough shooting first half with a 43 percent performance in the second half and a 37 percent clip for the game. SFA struggled from beyond the arc though, connecting on just 5-of-20 attempts while McNeese was 5-of-13.

The loss snapped a season-high three-game win streak for the Ladyjacks, who faced the Cowgirls for the second time this season. McNeese State previously defeated SFA, 74-57 back on Jan. 5 in Nacogdoches.

SFA actually outscored McNeese 37-32 in the second half and actually held a 51-50 lead with just under seven minutes remaining. However, the Cowgirls outscored SFA 16-9 over the final six minutes with seven of the points coming from the free throw line.

The Ladyjacks had opened the second half trailing 34-23 but the offense found a better rhythm in the first 10 minutes after halftime. SFA went on a 28-14 run that was highlighted by a Mells made three-pointer at the 7:54 mark to give the Ladyjacks their first lead of the game.

McNeese shot an efficient 42 percent from the field in the first half to help capture a 34-23 halftime lead. In the game's first 20 minutes of action it was the youngest Baggett (Allison) that gave SFA fits, scoring a team-high 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Ashlyn Baggett also chipped in eight points but shot just 3-of-11 from the floor. SFA was led in scoring by Roberts, who scored six points on 3-of-4 shooting and also had six first half rebounds.

The Ladyjacks offense as a whole struggled for a majority of the opening half, connecting on just 8-of-27 (30%) shots from the field and committing eight turnovers. SFA did close the first half with a bit of momentum by scoring eight points over the final three minutes.

SFA will close their three-game road trip on Saturday when they travel to Beaumont for a rematch against a Lady Cardinals team that defeated the Ladyjacks 65-50 back on Jan. 3 in Nacogdoches. That game is set for a 4 p.m. tipoff on Q107.7 FM.
