NACOGDOCHES, Texas - On the heels of allowing 95 points in a stinging loss at Texas State, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks responded Saturday with an impressive 66-58 victory over the defending Southland Conference champion and current co-conference leading McNeese State Cowgirls, 66-58 at William R. Johnson Coliseum.

The Ladyjacks (15-6, 5-3) played one of their most sound games of the season by shooting 41 percent from the field compared to just 36 percent for the Cowgirls. SFA also got the job done offensively as a unit with five Ladyjacks scoring six or more points, including double-figure efforts from Tammara Marion (15 points), Porsha Roberts (13 points) and Brittney Matthew (10 points).

McNeese State (17-6, 7-2) was led in scoring by the dynamic duo of Ashlyn Baggett (21 points) and Caitlyn Baggett (16 points) but as a team struggled mightily from three-point territory where the Ladyjacks limited them to just 23 percent shooting (7-of-31), including just 2-of-15 in the second half from long distance.

SFA fell behind 16-7 in the first eight minutes of the contest behind the hot shooting of Ashlyn Baggett, who connected on her first three three-point attempts for an early nine points.

The Ladyjacks would have an answer though, closing the first half on a 22-9 run over the final 12 minutes of the first half. During that stretch seven different Ladyjacks scored points, led by six points from Roberts.

In the second half SFA built a 39-32 advantage at the 16-minute mark following a jumper from Courtney Conwright, which proved to be the biggest lead SFA would hold the rest of the evening.

The Cowgirls rallied back with a 15-2 run to take a 47-41 lead over SFA with 10:53 remaining, but just as they have time and time again this season, the Ladyjacks found a way to close strong when it mattered most.

In a span of a minute and a half, the Ladyjacks connected on three consecutive three-pointers from Marion, Ashley Bettis and Matthew, respectively, to regain a 52-47 edge with just 7:32 left in the game.

The Cowgirls were able to trim the lead back down to 55-53 with 4:39 remaining but SFA prevented them from gaining any more ground, closing the game on an 11-5 run that included a huge three-pointer from Marion following a terrific assist from Roberts out of the post from underneath the SFA basket to stretch the lead at the time to 60-53.

As a team SFA had one of their most effective outings of the season from behind the arch, connecting on 9-of-21 for a clip of 43 percent.

SFA will be back on the road next Wednesday, Feb. 8 when they travel to Thibodeaux, La. for a game against Nicholls State. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. and the game can be heard on Q107.7 FM.
