HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks bounced back from a loss earlier in the week to defeat in-state rival Sam Houston State 58-52 on Saturday afternoon. It was a total team effort in the victory as three different Ladyjacks scored in double digits, and SFA was able to force the Bearkats into more turnovers en route to the victory.
Freshman Taylor Ross led the way with 16 points for SFA (14-11, 8-5) and added five assists and four steals to provide a strong presence on both sides of the court.
Juniors Porsha Roberts and Daylyn Harris joined Ross in double digits with each scoring 14 points. Roberts was 5-of-12 from the field while Harris was 6-of-9 and also pulled down eight rebounds.
The Ladyjacks were able to take the ball to the whole throughout most of the game as SFA dominated the scoring in the paint with 38 points compared to Sam Houston State's 16 points.
Sam Houston State (11-13, 6-7) got most of those points inside from Angela Beadle who finished the day with 14 points and eight rebounds. Jasmine Johnson led the Bearkats with 16 points, and Amanda Barnes added 15 points.
The Ladyjacks committed 14 turnovers, but were able to force Sam Houston State into 19 turnovers to get back to their aggressive defense. SFA was able to turn those 19 turnovers into15 points.
Tierany Henderson scored only three points for SFA, but those points were crucial as she hit the first 3-pointer of the game for the Ladyjacks with 4:15 left in the game to go up 50-41. Henderson played a big role on the glass for SFA, leading the team with 10 rebounds.
It was a close contest through most of the game and the Ladyjacks went on an 11-0 run early in the second half to grab the momentum and put the game out of reach for the Bearkats.
Sam Houston State hit a 3-pointer to go up 34-29 with 18:45 remaining, but the Bearkats would not score again until there was 9:14 left in the contest. SFA went on an 11-0 run during that span to go up 40-34.
The Bearkats would pull within three points twice, but the Ladyjacks quickly responded and extended the lead to as many as 10 points down the stretch.
The Ladyjacks will play just one game next week when they host Northwestern State at 4 p.m. Saturday at William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Demons bested SFA earlier this season in Natchitoches, La.
