NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Despite a career-high 21 points from freshman Porsha Roberts, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks as a team shot just 30 percent and were outscored 46-32 in the second half of a 70-55 loss to Sam Houston State Wednesday evening on Senior Night at William R. Johnson Coliseum.
SFA (20-8, 10-5) fell a full game behind SHSU (16-10, 11-4) in the SLC West Division standings and are now fourth overall in the SLC with just one game remaining Saturday at Northwestern State.
Playing in their final home game of their career, seniors Courtney Conwright, Tammara Marion and Amina Sawyer combined to score 17 points. Marion, who came into Wednesday averaging a little over 15 points per game, had a tough night scoring eight points on just 2-of-12 shooting.
The real difference in the contest came from behind the arch, where the Bearkats connected on 8-of-22 attempts while the Ladyjacks shot just 3-of-16. Both teams tied in rebounding with 49 apiece and SFA actually won the points in the paint battle, 30-22.
SHSU got a monster game from junior forward Britni Martin, who scored a team-high 19 points and made 5-of-10 attempts from beyond three-point territory. Forward Sequeena Thomas posted a double-double with 11 points and 21 rebounds, eight of which were offensive boards.
Both teams played a tightly contested first half that saw nine lead changes and no team held a lead larger than four points. Roberts led SFA with five first half points in the first 20 minutes but three Bearkats scored more than five points, including six from Martin.
In the second half the Ladyjacks allowed SHSU to shoot 45 percent (15-of-33) from the floor and Martin took the game over late by scoring 13 points in the final half.
Jasmine Johnson (12 points) and Chanice Smith (10 points) also scored in double-figures for the Bearkats.
The Ladyjacks will look to finish the regular season on a winning note when they travel to Natchitoches Saturday to take on Northwestern State. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the game can be heard on the radio on Q107.7 FM.
