Ladyjacks Cruise Past Lady Lions

HAMMOND, La. – Heading into Saturday’s contest junior center Porsha Roberts had only missed two shots in her career against Southeastern Louisiana. That number increased by only one as she and the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks rolled to a 92-79 victory. It was the first time since Feb. 29, 2011 the Ladyjacks scored 90 or more points against a conference opponent.
Roberts was 9-of-10 from the field and scored 18 points while pulling down nine rebounds and swatting three blocks.
Tierany Henderson got hot for the Ladyjacks beyond the arc hitting on 5-of-10 from deep to score 15 points. Kali Jerrell, Brentney Branch and Antionette Carter joined them in double digits with 15, 12 and 12 points, respectively.
SFA shot an impressive 56.5 percent from the field and tallied 23 assists on 35 makes for an efficient game on offense. It marked the fifth time in nine games the Ladyjacks have hit at least half their shots.
The Ladyjacks (17-11, 11-5) jumped on SELU (8-19, 7-8) early and shot 56 percent from the field in the first half with the team scoring in transition and finding Roberts in the paint. Roberts scored 12 of her 18 points in the first half hitting 6-of-7 shots. Her only miss was a contested put back on a rebound. Henderson also scored 12 points in the first half, hitting 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.
SFA began applying pressure midway through the first half with an 11-0 run after SELU pulled within two points. The Ladyjacks spread the offense around with five different players scoring during that stretch.
SELU was led in coring by Symone Miller with 19 points. Nanna Pool had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Pool entered the game leading the Southland Conference in rebounding. She got nine of her rebounds in the second half.
Aja Gibson scored 13 and Annessa De La Cruz added 10 to join their teammates in double figures.
SFA heads home next week to close the regular season against Oral Roberts and Central Arkansas. The Ladyjacks face ORU at 6 p.m. Thursday and take on the conference leading UCA Sugar Bears at 4 p.m. Saturday on ESPN3.com.
