SFA 48-NSU 44
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks punched their ticket to the Southland Conference Tournament with a 48-44 victory over the Northwestern State Lady Demons Saturday afternoon at William R. Johnson Coliseum.
SFA (12-15, 7-9) clinched at least the eighth seed in the eight-team SLC Tournament that is set to begin March 13 in Katy, Texas by holding NSU to just 35 percent shooting for the game. Coming into play on Saturday both SFA and NSU were tied for seventh place in the SLC but the victory on Saturday gave SFA the season-series tiebreaker (2-0).
Sophomore center Porsha Roberts recorded her eighth double-double of the season and the second in as many games with 11 points and 12 rebounds on Saturday. The Ladyjacks dominated NSU in the points in the paint department, 28-12 and also outscored the Lady Demons bench 22-2.
NSU was led in scoring by freshman guard Keisha Lee, who scored a game-high 18 points. The Ladyjacks limited NSU leading scorer Jasmine Upchurch to only six points on 3-of-10 shooting from the field and forced the senior to foul out.
Perhaps the play of the game came with just 18 seconds remaining in regulation, when after NSU's Keisha Lee hit her second straight three-pointer to cut the lead to 46-44, SFA sophomore Daylyn Harris drove in for the game-clinching layup to make the score 48-44.
SFA never trailed after the 14:11 mark in the first half and the Ladyjacks defense was stifling in the first 20 minutes, limiting the Lady Demons to just 25 percent shooting from the field (6-of-24). The Ladyjacks only shot 33 percent themselves from the floor in the first half but SFA scored 14 points in the paint and had 10 points off the bench.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action next Thursday, March 7 when they host Piney Woods rival Sam Houston State at 6 p.m. That game will be streamed on ESPN3.com.
