PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks closed the final three minutes of regulation on an 11-5 run to propel themselves to a 62-55 victory on the road against Prairie View A&M Tuesday evening at the William Nicks Building.

SFA (2-0) was led in scoring sophomore guard Brittney Matthew (11 points) who was one of seven Ladyjacks to contribute six or more points.

In a game that saw 14 lead changes, it was the Ladyjacks who were the most poised in the closing minutes. Trailing 50-49, senior Ashlee Mells made a driving layup to give the Ladyjacks a 51-50 lead with 3:15 left. One possession later sophomore forward Tierany Henderson knocked down a clutch three-pointer from the left wing to push the lead to 54-50. Following a jumper from Latia Williams to make the score 54-52, SFA made four consecutive clutch free throws from both sophomore center Porsha Roberts and Matthew to push the lead to 58-52.

Prairie View (0-2) responded with a clutch shot of their own, a three-pointer from Kiara Etienne to cut the SFA lead to 58-55 with only 53 seconds remaining. The Ladyjacks' defense, who held the Lady Panthers to just 28 percent shooting in the second half, forced PVU into an airball three-pointer and made all four of their remaining free throws to close out the game.

Junior transfer Antionette Carter, Henderson and Roberts all scored nine points followed by seven points from Mells and six a piece from Daylyn Harris and KK Jerrell.

The Lady Panthers were led in scoring by Etienne, who scored a game-high 23 points, followed by 15 points from Williams and 14 first-half points from Larissa Scott.

SFA came out of the gates a bit sluggish offensively, committing seven turnovers and allowing five offensive rebounds in the first 12 minutes, which contributed to a 24-18 deficit. However, the Ladyjacks responded with a 9-2 run of their own behind back-to-back jumpers from Carter, a layup from Matthew and a three-pointer from the top of the arch from Henderson to take a 27-26 lead.

Prairie View closed out the half by outscoring SFA 7-6 to take a 33-32 lead into halftime. Scott (14 points) and Etienne (11 points) scored a combined 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting to lead the Lady Panthers in the first 20 minutes. Prairie View shot 48 percent from the floor and held a 16-12 points in the paint advantage.

Four Ladyjacks scored six or more points in the first half led by seven points from Carter, who shot 2-of-3 from the floor and 2-of-2 at the charity stripe. As a team SFA shot 43 percent from the floor but just 4-of-13 from beyond the arch and made just six trips to the free throw line.

The Ladyjacks will be back in action this Saturday when they host Wiley College at 12 p.m. at William R. Johnson Coliseum.
