HOUSTON, Texas – Porsha Roberts posted her first double-double of the season as she helped lead the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks basketball team to a win over Prairie View A&M at the David Jones Memorial Classic on Saturday. Roberts posted 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in the victory as the Ladyjacks improve to 3-3 on the season.

SFA won 76-70 thanks to Roberts’ effort and the stellar free-throw shooting by the team. The Ladyjacks were 31-of-40 at the line on the day, including 9-of-11 from Roberts.

Two other Ladyjacks played a key role in the win as Tierany Henderson was strong and Antionette Carter continued her strong play off the bench. Henderson added nine points and eight rebounds for SFA. Carter had eight points and also pulled down eight rebounds.

Prairie View A&M (0-4) was able to lead SFA in a few offensive categories, hitting more baskets and making five more 3-pointers than the Ladyjacks on the day, but it was free-throw shooting that proved to be a major difference in the game.

The Ladyjacks were 31-of-40 on the day, and Prairie View A&M attempted only 24 free throws. The Panthers hit 16 free throws as SFA was able to avoid getting into foul trouble and putting PVAMU at the line.

SFA needed those free throws as the team only made three shots from beyond the arc, two of them by Bretney Branch as she was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and hit both her shots from deep. Prairie View, however, would shoot 8-of-14 from long range. The Panthers did pull down 20 offensive rebounds, but they resulted in only 20 second chance points. SFA’s 33 defensive rebounds helped keep the Panthers’ second chances to a minimum.

The Ladyjacks will again be in action on Sunday in Houston for the second day of the David Jones Memorial Classic, as SFA will face Kent State. Tip is set for 1 p.m. from Hofheinz Pavilion. This will mark the first time SFA and Kent State have faced each other in women’s basketball.
