The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team improved to 7-4 overall and 4-0 in the Southland Conference with its 71-54 victory over Nicholls State Monday night.
The Ladyjacks built a 14-point first-half lead only to see it dwindle to one-point with 4-minutes and 33-seconds remaining before the break. The Lady Colonels were able to keep the game close with their advantage at the free-throw line. NSU was 10-of-14 (.714 percent) from the charity stripe during the first half. But the Ladyjacks were able to build their advantage back to double figures heading to the intermission by closing out the half on a 7-2 run.
Nicholls State opened up the second half by narrowing the lead back to six points before SFA took control of the game. The Ladyjacks responded with another run (9-2 over the next 3:10), led by senior Jessica Guild (Flower Mound, Texas) and her game-high 18 points. She also added seven rebounds, four assists and two steals in the victorious effort.
SFA also took control of the boards in the second half, as it grabbed 12 of its 20 offensive rebounds during the second stanza. SFA finished the game with 52-36 advantage on the glass. The Ladyjacks recorded their best three-point shooting performance of the season hitting 4-of-7 (.571) attempts from outside the arc.
Senior Chaquita Dilworth (Temple, Texas) finished the game with 15 points and nine rebounds. Classmate Latisha Prater (Cotton Port, La.) added 16 while pulling down eight rebounds.
SFA returns to league action Saturday against Louisiana-Monroe. The game is scheduled to tipoff at 5:30 p.m., from the Ewing Coliseum.
