NACOGDOCHES, Texas - After falling behind by as much as 34 points in the first half, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks basketball team made a valiant comeback late in the second half but still fell short in a 74-57 home loss to the McNeese State Cowgirls (6-7, 1-1) Saturday afternoon at William R. Johnson Coliseum.
The Ladyjacks (5-8, 0-2) were eventually able to cut the Cowgirls lead to 66-55 with 6:12 remaining in the game but were unable to pull any closer.
Both sophomore center Porsha Roberts and junior forward Antionette Carter led the Ladyjacks with 14 points while the Cowgirls' Ashlyn Baggett led McNeese with a game-high 28 points on 9-of-19 shooting from the field.
McNeese started the game on fire and jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the game's first two minutes en route to a 45-22 halftime lead over SFA. Overall the Cowgirls shot 49 percent from the field compared to SFA's 42 percent from the floor.
The Ladyjacks will be right back in action on Monday, Jan. 7 at 6 p.m. when they travel to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for the first conference road game of the season.
