SFA to Honor Hall of Fame Coach Sue Gunter

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin athletics department will honor the late Sue Gunter Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008, when the Ladyjacks host Sam Houston State at the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
The Sue Gunter Day festivities will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a luncheon in the Twilight Ballroom of the Baker Pattillo Student Center. Guest speakers will include former Louisiana Tech head coach Leon Barmore and former Texas head coach Jody Conradt.
The Ladyjacks' game against rival Sam Houston State will tip off at 3 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum. At halftime of the game, SFA will hold a dedication ceremony for the Sue Gunter Ladyjack Basketball Office Suite, which will include a special video presentation.
A Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, and Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, Gunter spent 15 seasons in Nacogdoches as the Ladyjacks' head coach. During that time she won 266 games, while recording a .751 winning percentage. Gunter guided SFA to five AIAW National tournaments and four state titles.
Gunter left SFA to become the head coach at LSU prior to the 1982-83 season. In 22 seasons with the Tigers, she guided LSU to 13 NCAA tournament berth, seven NCAA Sweet 16 appearances, three Elite Eights, three WNIT postseason tournaments and one WNIT championship. Gunter was twice named SEC Coach of the Year.
Gunter's coaching abilities stretched far beyond the collegiate game, and onto the international scene. Gunter served as the U.S. National team coach in 1976, 1978 and 1980. She was an assistant on the 1976 U.S. Olympic Silver medal team before being named the head coach of the 1980 Olympic squad.
