The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team closed out the 2001-02 regular season Saturday afternoon in victorious fashion, 78-55, over Texas-Arlington. SFA closes out the regular season with a 22-5 (.815 win percentage) overall record and a 19-1 (.950) conference mark.
The Lady Mavericks held a two-point advantage early in the contest, but that is the closest to a win UTA would get as the Ladyjacks went on a 22-4 run to open up a 24-8 first-half advantage. The Ladyjacks forced the Lady Mavericks into 12 first-half turnovers led by senior Jessica Guild's (Flower Mound, Texas) six steals. Guild set the school's single-season steals record with her first steal of the game. She finished the game with 11 points, nine assists and six steals. SFA rolled to a 40-17 intermission lead.
The Ladyjack offense took over in the second half as it finished the game shooting 32-of-64 (.500) from the field behind senior Lathisa Prater's (Cottonport, La.) fifth consecutive double-double. Prater finished the game with a team-high 14 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Nicole Guild (Flower Mound, Texas) was the SFA spark from outside the three-point arc going 3-of-4 (.750) from three-point range. She finished the game with 13 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Rola Ogunoye led UTA with a game-high 23 points. Sheena Johnson recorded a double-double for the Lady Mavericks with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Ladyjacks return to action Thursday night in the semifinals of the Southland Conference tournament. The game is slated to tipoff at 7 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
