March 9, 2014
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin junior forward Porsha Roberts earned Southland Conference Player of the Week for her performances last week in helping the Ladyjacks win their first conference title since 2010.
The league office announced the award Sunday, a day after Roberts scored 20 points, pulled down six rebounds and swatted four blocks against Central Arkansas to claim a share of the Southland crown.
Roberts led SFA to two vital wins last week to help SFA win its 16th overall regular-season championship. She averaged 21.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.0 blocks in wins over Oral Roberts and Central Arkansas.
Against ORU, Roberts scored 23 points while going 11-for-14 from the free throw line. She was one rebound shy of a double-double against the Golden Eagles and recorded four blocks, four assists and a steal in the contest. In the game against UCA to decide the conference championship, Roberts scored 20 points and was 10-for-11 from the free throw line. On the defensive side, Roberts notched four blocks and limited UCA to 41 points on 28.3 percent (17-for-60) shooting from the field.
This is SFA’s first player of the week honor this season.
With the wins, SFA earned the No. 2 seed in the Southland Conference Women's Basketball Tournament in Katy on March 13-16. SFA will take the court Saturday at 2:30 p.m., in the second semifinal game.
