NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks have received a bid to host the opening round of the Women’s Basketball Invitational and will take on former conference foe Texas State at 7 p.m. Thursday at William R. Johnson Coliseum.
With the WBI appearance the Ladyjacks make their 27th postseason appearance in school history and first since also playing in the WBI in 2012.
SFA (20-12) won a share of the Southland Conference title this season going 13-5 in league play and tying with Lamar for the crown. The Ladyjacks fell to Northwestern State in the Southland Conference Tournament championship game on Sunday afternoon.
In his four seasons as head coach of the Ladyjacks, Brandon Schneider has led his team to the championship game of the conference tournament twice and to the WBI twice as well.
The Ladyjacks fell to Northern Iowa in their last postseason appearance with the Panthers winning in Nacogdoches by the final of 83-67.
Texas State (16-15) heads to the WBI after falling in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Championship to Arkansas State. The Bobcats have three players averaging double digits in scoring.
SFA and Texas State had three common opponents during the 2013-14 season. The Bobcats fell at TCU as did the Ladyjacks. Texas State faced Southland Conference members Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Lamar, losing to both.
During nonconference play, SFA played Sun Belt member Louisiana-Monroe on the road and lost 85-83. SFA also defeated Sun Belt member Georgia State during the Preseason Women’s National Invitational. Texas State split its regular season meetings with GSU and defeated the Panthers in the Sun Belt Conference Championship opening round.
