Schneider Announces 2013-14 Schedule
Sept. 12, 2013
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin head women’s basketball coach Brandon Schneider announced the release of the upcoming 2013-14 schedule for the Ladyjacks Thursday afternoon.
The 30-game schedule is highlighted by SFA’s season opener, in which the Ladyjacks will participate in the preseason Women’s National Invitational Tournament. SFA will take on LSU in the opening round in Baton Rouge, with the second and third round opponents and destinations to be determined. The Ladyjacks last participated in the preseason event in the 2001-02 season, dropping a 74-57 decision to Florida International in the season opener, Nov. 9, in Miami.
“Obviously we’re excited about participating in the preseason WNIT” Schneider said. “We feel like the level of competition we are going to face, just in the first three games, will really give us an indication of the things we do well verse the things we need to improve.”
SFA’s non-conference schedule is also highlighted with a trip to Tucson, Ariz., to play Arizona (Nov. 20), in the first meeting the two schools since the 2001-02 season. The Ladyjacks are 2-0 all-time verse the Wildcats, with a 90-76 win in 1998-99 and a 68-66 edge in the 2001.
SFA’s other non-conference road contests include Prairie View A&M and Kent State in the Houston Thanksgiving Tournament (Nov. 30-Dec. 1), Texas Christian (Dec. 4) and Louisiana-Monroe (Dec. 8).
The Ladyjacks will play host to four non-conference home games, before opening up the Southland Conference slate. SFA will have its home opener Nov. 23 against Southern Methodist, after traveling to SMU each of the past two season. The Ladyjacks will also welcome Grambling State (Dec. 14) and Henderson State (Dec. 19) to William R. Johnson Coliseum, before closing out the 2013 calendar year against Texas A&M – Commerce (Dec. 30).
The Southland Conference added four new universities – Abilene Christian, Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word and New Orleans – to the league entering the 2013-14 athletic seasons. HBU and UNO are immediately eligible for postseason play, while ACU and IW are not. Games against ACU and IW will count towards conference records.
“I think it’s going to be a different schedule," Schneider said. “I’ve been here three years and we’ve made changes it seems like every year. I’m anxious to compete against the new schools. It’s going to be the first time where we aren’t seeing a double round-robin. Our program is to the point where our first recruiting class is now juniors. We hope that we start to see some dividends."
SFA opens conference and begins the 2014 calendar year at home against Lamar (Jan. 2). The Ladyjacks will look to exact revenge on the Lady Cardinals, who narrowly eliminated SFA from the 2012-13 conference tournament.
Following a home matchup against Sam Houston (Jan. 4), the Ladyjacks will hit the road for it’s toughest stretch of the season facing five league opponents on their home courts from Jan. 9-25. The road swing includes stops at HBU (Jan. 9), Texas A&M – Corpus Christi (Jan. 11), Northwestern State (Jan. 18), Oral Roberts (Jan. 23) and Central Arkansas (Jan. 30). SHSU and ORU shared the SLC regular season title, while the Golden Eagles won the conference tournament to earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
After three weeks on the road, SFA will return home for four games, beginning with ACU (Jan. 30). The Ladyjacks own a 3-0 record against the Wildcats dating back to the 1977-78 season.
SFA will play Incarnate Word for the first time in program history, when the Ladyjacks takes on the Cardinals in Nacogdoches on February 1. SFA will also host Nicholls St. (Feb. 6) and McNeese St. (Feb.8) in the early part of February, before making return trips to Lamar (Feb. 13) and Sam Houston (Feb 15).
The Ladyjacks will play three out of their last five games at home, in the latter part of February and beginning of March to close out the regular season. SFA will host Northwestern State (Feb. 22), Oral Roberts (Mar. 6) and Central Arkansas (Mar. 8), with a road contest at Southeastern Louisiana (Mar. 1) thrown in. The home and regular-season finale verse the Sugar Bear will also serve as senior night for the Ladyjacks.
The Southland Conference Tournament will begin the following week at the Leonard E. Merrell Center in Katy, Texas, lasting Mar. 12-15.
