Roberts, Carter Named To Preseason All-SLC Teams
Oct. 24, 2013
FRISCO, Texas - Junior center Porsha Roberts and senior forward Antionette Carter were each named to the preseason All-Southland Conference teams for the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team, league officials announced Thursday.
Roberts, after earning second team honors as a sophomore, was an automatic selection to the first team, while Carter garnered second team recognition.
SFA was one of eight universities represented on the two preseason teams. The Ladyjacks were also one of three schools to land two players on the squads, joined by Nicholls State and Lamar, while Central Arkansas, McNeese State, Northwestern State, Oral Roberts and Southeastern Louisiana, each had one student-athlete on the teams.
Roberts, a native of Waco, Texas, led the league in blocks last season while ranking third in field goal percentage, fifth in rebounding and eighth in scoring. Roberts tallied 47 blocks while pulling down 115 of her 227 rebounds on the defensive side of the ball. She averaged 14.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game while shooting an impressive 56.9 percent from the field. The center recorded nine double-doubles and 25 double-digit scoring performances in 2012-13. Roberts led the Ladyjacks to the second round of the conference tournament and is the lone conference player returning from last season's inaugural all-defensive team. Roberts' sophomore efforts came one year removed from being tabbed the SLC's Freshman of the Year.
Carter, who played a vital role for the Ladyjacks last season coming off the bench, looks to improve on her numbers this season as a starter.
The forward appeared in all 31 games, making 14 starts, in her first season with the Ladyjacks. After coming to SFA from Murray State College, Carter recorded eight double-figure scoring performances, while playing in 577 minutes in 2012-13. The senior from Brentwood, Tenn., averaged 7.5 points and 6.9 rebounds in 20.7 minutes per game last year for the Ladyjacks.
A record 14 teams will compete in the Southland this season with the additions of Houston Baptist, New Orleans, Abilene Christian and UIW, though the two latter teams will not play a full conference schedule this season or be eligible for postseason play until 2017-18. The 2013-14 season begins Friday, Nov. 8 when 13 Southland teams take the court. Conference play starts Jan. 2, 2014. The 2014 Southland Conference Basketball Tournament will return for its seventh season at the Leonard E. Merrell Center in Katy, Texas, March 12-15.
SFA, under fourth-year head coach Brandon Schneider, will open the 2013-14 schedule with the Preseason WNIT.
