Ladyjacks Take Down Warhawks 68-58 On Opening Night
All offseason long SFA head coach Brandon Schneider spoke of the potential depth the Ladyjacks basketball team would present in 2011-12. Those words could not have been truer in the season-opener at ULM where the Ladyjacks had seven players score five or more points en route to a 68-58 win over the Warhawks Friday evening at the Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
THE WARHAWKS: ULM struggled last season going 9-21 and 7-9 in Sun Belt play. Head coach Mona Martin enters her 18th season with the Warhawks and will lead a team that returns junior guard Jasmine Shaw, who averaged 7.0 PPG and 4.8 RPG last season en route to a 2012-13 Preseason All-Sun Belt Third-Team selection. The Warhawks will be looking to replace 1,000-point scorer Larrie Williams (1,078), the second most assists in a career (452) from Elizabeth Torres and 28 career starts and the teams leading rebounder (6.2 per game) in 2011-12, Marion Zollicoffer.
vs ULM: SFA holds a commanding 42-14 series lead over ULM and has won eight of the last 11 meetings, including a 72-71 overtime thriller in the two team's last meeting in Nacogdoches in 2006.
COVERAGE: Friday's season opener will be streamed live for free on sfajacks.com. Also, you can follow updates throughout the night on the @SFA_Athletics Twitter page.
UP NEXT: Following Friday's opener the Ladyjacks will make their first road appearance of the season on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at Prairie View at 5:30 p.m.
PRESEASON POLLS: SFA was picked to finish second in the Southland Conference Preseason Coaches Poll and fourth in the Sports Information Directors Poll.
HEAD COACH Brandon Schneider: SFA head coach Brandon Schneider is entering his third season with the Ladyjacks and 15th overall. Last year he led SFA to a 23-10 record, a +11 win turnaround from the previous season. That was the third-largest turnaround in the country.
ROBERTS NAMED PRESEASON SLC SECOND-TEAM: Sophomore center Porsha Roberts, the reigning Southland Conference Freshman of the Year, was named to the SLC Preseason Second-Team. She was the lone SFA representative on either team. Roberts set an SFA freshman record with 59 blocks last season and currently holds the SFA all-time blocks per game record at 1.7 BPG.
FIVE NEWCOMERS: SFA welcomes in five newcomers to this year's squad, including JuCo transfers Antionette Carter and K.K. Jerrell, both of whom will play major roles for the Ladyjacks in 2012-13. The Ladyjacks will also incorporate freshmen Paulletta Powell, LaNesha Middleton and Victoria Pena.
