SFA Wraps Up Mid-Winter Classic
Jan. 16, 2011
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack bowling team went 2-1 Sunday on the final day of the ASU Mid-Winter Classic. SFA finished ninth in the 14-team tournament.
SFA came into Sunday's bracket - played out in best-of-seven baker matches - seeded eighth. The Ladyjacks fell to Texas Southern in the opener, then knocked off Jackson State and defeated Texas Southern in a rematch to finish the tournament.
"On the whole, we didn't have the kind of weekend we were looking for," SFA head coach Laura Cramer said. "But it was nice to finish with a couple of wins. Hopefully, that's something we can build on moving forward."
SFA dropped the first three games against Texas Southern before rallying for wins in Games 4 and 5. But the Ladyjacks lost a three-pin decision in the sixth game to seal the match.
SFA opened its match against Jackson State in similar fashion, losing three straight games. But the Ladyjacks got a 187-185 win in Game 4, then rattled off three consecutive victories to take the match.
The Ladyjacks again started slow in the finale, spotting Texas Southern a two-game lead. SFA recovered to take Game 3, then pulled ahead with wins in Games 4 and 5. Texas Southern snagged a one-pin win in Game 6 to tie the match, but SFA scored a decisive verdict in Game 7, 190-158, to finish with a victory.
"We battled it out today," Cramer said. "Our focus was on converting spares. Nicole Parkhurst did an amazing job all weekend, but especially today. She was the anchor bowler in today's baker format, and she stepped up several times with strikes in crucial moments."
The Ladyjacks will be back in action on Jan. 28 for the Kutztown Invitational.
