Bowling Places Fifth at Mid-Winter Invitational

JONESBORO, Ark. – Stephen F. Austin went 2-1 over the final day of the 2014 Mid-Winter Invitational, closing out the three-day event in fifth-place out of 13 schools. The Ladyjacks posted an 8-4 record, notching their third top-five finish of the season.
After posting a perfect 4-0 mark Saturday, SFA opened up the three-match best-of-seven series against eighth-ranked Vanderbilt, going head-to-head against the Commodores for the second time in less than 24 hours. The Commodores struck first, taking the opening game 197-174, but SFA rallied to take the next four, including a commanding 247-194 margin in the final game, taking a 4-1 decision over Vanderbilt and improving to 4-0 on the season against the Commodores.
The Ladyjacks then met up with third-ranked Central Missouri and staged one of the best series of the tournament. After dropping the first two games, SFA rallied to take the third (200-179) and fourth (228-289), evening the series at 2-2. UCM edged out the Ladyjacks in the fifth (197-181), only to see SFA respond with a 194-158 decision in the sixth. But the Mules would outlast the Ladyjacks 208-179 to secure the victory.
SFA’s final match of the tournament was against McKendree as the Ladyjacks responded with a commanding 4-1 decision. SFA took the opening two sets 214-158 and 191-160 before allowing the Bearcats to take the third 210-155. But the Ladyjacks rebounded with a 201-180 decision in the fourth before outlasting McKendree 222-214 in the fifth to secure the match.
SFA closed out the three-day event finishing fifth with an 8-4 overall record as top-ranked and host Arkansas State captured the team title, edging out Sam Houston State. Nebraska placed third with Central Missouri and the Ladyjacks rounding out the top-five.
The Ladyjacks return to action this weekend, heading to Reading, Pa., to compete in the Kutztown Invitational beginning Friday, January 24th, and running through Sunday, January 26th.
