Bowling Remains Sixth in Arlington
Feb. 1, 2014
ARLINGTON, Texas – Stephen F. Austin posted a 2-3 record over the second day of the Prairie View A&M Invitational in Arlington, sitting in sixth-place overall. The Ladyjacks are 5-5 through the first two rounds heading into Sunday’s three best-of-seven bracket.
Saturday saw the Ladyjacks competing in five head-to-head meetings, beginning with a showdown against sixth-ranked Nebraska. Led by a 203 from senior Whitney McCoy and a 199 from fellow senior Nicole Parkhurst, SFA started the day strong with a 933-854 victory over the Cornhuskers, improving to 2-1 on the year against Nebraska.
A pair of freshmen Ladyjacks cracked the 200-pin club in the second matchup of the day as SFA went toe-to-toe with Texas Southern. Kiara Grant was SFA’s top bowler, recording a 214, with fellow freshman Paige Kraushaar notching a 212 as the Ladyjacks handed the Tigers an 876-826 defeat, improving to 5-2 on the tournament.
Up next for SFA was a showdown with rival Sam Houston State as the Ladyjacks were looking to improve upon their 5-1 series mark against the Bearkats. Kraushaar had another strong outing, bowling a 209, with sophomore Melanie Crawford adding a 203, but it wasn’t enough as SFA fell to its Southland Conference rivals 962-925.
The Ladyjacks met up with top-ranked Arkansas State in the fourth match of the day as Crawford led the way for SFA, notching the highest score of the day for the Ladyjacks with a 226. But she was the only bowler able to reach 200 as the Ladyjacks fell to the Red Wolves 1,025-917.
SFA looked to close out the day on a high note against Jackson State with Grant and Parkhurst each recording strong outings for the Ladyjacks. Grant led the way with a team-best 202, followed by Parkhurst’s 200 as Crawford and Kraushaar each bowled a 182. But SFA came up just short, falling to Jackson State 930-923 to sit at 5-5 overall.
SFA will try to make a run at its fifth top-five finish of the season Sunday as the teams compete in three best-of-seven baker matches. Arkansas State leads the 12-team tournament, followed by Nebraska, Sam Houston State, Vanderbilt and Maryland-Eastern Shore to round out the top-five.
