SFA Notches Third-Straight Fifth-Place Finish
Feb. 2, 2014
ARLINGTON, Texas – Stephen F. Austin shook off an early defeat to rally for a fifth-place finish at the Prairie View A&M Invitational in Arlington. It marks the third-straight fifth-place showing for the fourth-ranked Ladyjacks in the past three weekends and the fifth top-five finish of the 2013-14 season.
Competing in three best-of-seven baker matches, SFA drew eighth-ranked Vanderbilt in the opening match, a team the Ladyjacks had posted a 4-0 record against this season. But the Commodores had the upper hand on the day, taking a 4-1 victory over the Ladyjacks as SFA dropped to 5-6 for the three-day event.
SFA drew 17th-ranked Valparaiso in round two and raced out to a 3-0 lead on the Crusaders, taking the first three games 166-147, 197-193 and 167-145. Valparaiso responded with a pair of victories in games four and five, surpassing 200 in each, before SFA regrouped to take the sixth, bowling a team-high 236 to complete the victory.
That pitted the Ladyjacks against third-ranked Central Missouri in the final round of the tournament, setting up one of the most thrilling matches of the season for SFA. The Ladyjacks once again raced out to a 3-0 lead, taking the first three games 196-172, 227-194 and 181-169. The Jennies would respond in a big way, however taking the next three games 221-212, 204-185 and 212-203, setting up the deciding seventh game. It went down to the final frame, but SFA was able to squeak out a 184-180 victory, clinching its match against Central Missouri and finishing the tournament at 7-6.
Nebraska captured the team title, defeating Vanderbilt in the championship match to take home the crown. Arkansas State and Sam Houston State joined the Ladyjacks in the top-five with Central Missouri finishing just outside, placing sixth overall.
After three tournaments in three weeks, SFA now will have a little bit of a break before returning to the lanes competing in the Sam Houston State Track Kat Clash. The three-day event, being held in Houston, will begin Friday, February 14th before wrapping up on Sunday, February 16th.
