KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Stephen F. Austin compiled a 3-2 record through the opening day of the 2014 Central Missouri Invitational, sitting in second-place among the 14 team field with 5,146 pins.
Competing in five baker-style matches, the Ladyjacks opened up the day with a convincing 1,254-936 victory over 14th-ranked Valparaiso, the highest baker-style point total in program history. SFA scored no lower than 230 all match, including a 278-184 victory in game four, as the Ladyjacks posted a 250.8 average for the match.
SFA then went head-to-head against top-ranked Arkansas State in one of the top matches of the day. After falling in the first game 232-200, SFA rallied for a 211-168 victory in game two, followed by a 183-183 draw in game three. The Red Wolves eeked out a 233-230 victory in game four, giving the Ladyjacks an 824-816 lead heading into the final game. But ASU outlasted SFA in the fifth, defeating the Ladyjacks 223-192 to take the 1,039-1,016 victory.
SFA responded with another victory in the third match of the day, defeating Louisiana Tech 1,029-817. The Ladyjacks won each of the five games against the Lady Techsters, including a dominating 235-146 victory in game four.
The Ladyjacks then prepared for their second meeting with one of the top-ranked teams in the nation, this time against second-ranked Nebraska. The Cornhuskers took each game of the five-game match, defeating the Ladyjacks 1,019-859 as SFA fell to 2-2 on the day.
The final match of the day pitted SFA against New Jersey City and the Ladyjacks ended the day on a high note, earning the 988-715 decision. SFA won each of the five games of the match, starting off with a 213-156 victory then closing out the day in dominant fashion, winning 215-109 in the final game.
Through the first day of competition, SFA is second in the team standings, trailing only second-ranked Nebraska (5,229). Vanderbilt sits third (4,936) with Arkansas State (4,849) and host Central Missouri (4,845) rounding out the top-five.
Saturday’s competition gets underway at 10 a.m. as the teams compete in five five-person team matches. It will mark the final day of competition as the tournament will end early due to inclement weather expected in the Kansas City area Sunday.
