SFA Finishes Second at USBC Sectionals

FORT WORTH, Texas – Stephen F. Austin secured its spot in the 2014 USBC national tournament, recording a second-place finish at the USBC sectionals in Fort Worth. The Ladyjacks finished the two-day event with 12,894 total pins, finishing just behind first-place Wichita State.
The Ladyjacks competed in 64 baker games over the two-day event, bowling 32 games on Saturday and 32 more on Sunday. Over the course of two days, SFA bowled a 200 or higher in 33 games, averaging 201.47 per game with a high of 255 in game 52.
Competing in 16-game blocks, SFA came out strong in the first block, recording 3,191 total pins (199.44 avg.) with a high of 237 in game nine, sitting second behind the Shockers and 23 pins ahead of third-place William Penn. The Ladyjacks then closed out the first day by recording 3,408 total pins in block two (213.00 avg.), leapfrogging Wichita State to lead after day one with 6,599 total pins.
Sunday began with the third block of games as SFA recorded 3,013 total pins (188.31 avg.), upping its total pin count to 9,612 and falling back into second behind Wichita State’s 9,871. The Ladyjacks closed out the tournament with a strong showing in the final block, tallying 3,282 total pins (205.13), six shy of the Shockers and settled in to the second-place finish.
Wichita State captured the team title with 13,159 total pins, finishing 265 pins ahead of the Ladyjacks. Midland (12,381) placed third with Newman (12,242) and West Texas A&M (12,180) rounding out the top-five.
SFA now awaits its fate so see if it qualifies for the 2014 NCAA Bowling Championships, being held April 10-12 in Wickliffe, Ohio. The NCAA will announce the eight teams competing during the 2014 Selection Show, being held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 26 at NCAA.com.
