NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks bowling team remained in third place at the Tulane Collegiate Bowling Invitational, compiling a 4-1 record in team competition on Saturday highlighted by a victory over No. 2 Arkansas State.
No. 10 SFA (7-2) will enter match play on Sunday trailing only the first-place Red Wolves (7-2, 8629 pins) and second-place Sam Houston State (9-0, 8457 pins).
The Ladyjacks began play on Saturday in grand fashion by beating Arkansas State, 948-922. SFA followed that victory with a narrow loss to undefeated SHSU by a score of 865-852 but finished the afternoon with three consecutive victories, defeating Jackson State (968-861), Tulane (975-754) and Grambling (810-703).
Individually the Ladyjacks were led by junior Nicole Parkhurst, who finished fourth overall with a total pinfall of 1006 and a five-game average score of 201.2. Also by finishing in the top-5 Parkhurst was selected to the all-tournament team.
Just narrowly missing an all-tournament team selection herself was SFA freshman Melanie Crawford, who ended the day in sixth place with a total pinfall of 975 and an average score of 195 in her first collegiate tournament. Also finishing in the top-20 were seniors Dustie Hammond, who finished 19th (889 pinfall, 177.8 average), and senior Maureen Surkein (20th- 884).
Other competitors on Saturday were freshman Stephanie Sims (27th), sophomore Chelsea King (48th), and sophomore Amanda Boethel (63rd).
The Ladyjacks will start match play Sunday at 9:30 a.m. against Jackson State (4-5, 7775 pins). SFA bowling will be live streaming their matches on Sunday for free at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/sfabowling.
