Bowling Opens 2014 at Mid-Winter Invitational

Opening Frame
Stephen F. Austin heads to the lanes for the first time in 2014, traveling to the 2014 Mid-Winter Invitational in Jonesboro, Ark. Hosted by top-ranked Arkansas State, the tournament gets underway Friday, January 17, before wrapping up Sunday, January 19.

Tournament Information
SFA is one of 14 teams competing in the three-day event, which gets underway at noon Friday with five total five-game baker matches. Saturday morning the teams get underway at around 9:30 a.m. with five team games, leading up to three matches in a best-of-seven bracket format Sunday morning.

Participating Teams
SFA is one of seven ranked teams competing in the event as six of the top-eight teams in the latest NTCA media poll will take part over the weekend. Top-ranked Arkansas State serves as the tournament host with No. 3 Central Missouri, No. 6 Nebraska, No. 7 Wisconsin-Whitewater, No. 8 Vanderbilt and No. 10 Sam Houston State joining the fourth-ranked Ladyjacks. Bethune-Cookman, Elmhurst, McKendree, Louisiana Tech, Tulane, Alabama-Birmingham and Valparaiso will round out the 14-team field.

Ladyjacks Against the Field
To date through the 2013-14 season, SFA has posted a 13-9 record against teams competing in the Mid-Winter Invitational, highlighted by a 4-1 mark on the season against Sam Houston State.

SFA Travel Squad
Head coach Amber Lemke will travel nine of her bowlers to the tournament this weekend. The SFA travel squad is comprised of seniors Sierra Gibbons and Nicole Parkhurst, junior Chelsea King, sophomores Melanie Crawford and Danielle Lynn and freshmen Kiara Grant, Paige Kraushaar and Brianna Newton.

Ladyjacks Ranked Fourth
SFA reached another program milestone last week as the Ladyjacks were ranked fourth in the January 9th NTCA media poll, marking the highest ranking for SFA bowling in its’ five-year program history. The Ladyjacks remained fifth in the NTCA coaches poll, making them the highest ranked program in the state of Texas.

Last Time Out
A handful of SFA bowlers participated in the 2014 USBC Team USA Trials in Las Vegas, Nev., held Jan. 5-9. Going head-to-head with over 100 competitors, Nicole Parkhurst led the way for SFA, placing 19th overall with a 206.17 average. Kiara Grant finished 62nd overall, followed by Melanie Crawford’s 73rd-place showing and Paige Kraushaar checking in at 80th overall.

Looking Ahead
Following this weekend’s trip to Jonesboro, Ark., SFA will return to competition next weekend, traveling to Reading, Pa., for the Kutztown Invitational. The three-day tournament will begin Friday, January 24th before wrapping up Sunday, January 26th.
