May 4, 2009
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - A full house was on hand on Sunday at Texas Pro Bowl as SFA head bowling coach Laura Cramer put on the program's fundraiser Kickoff Tournament, introducing the program to the Nacogdoches community.
The tournament consisted of 19, four-person teams competing in two qualifying games before the field was narrowed to the top eight seeded teams in a bracket-style format. The event was held to raise funds for the upstart program, and gave out numerous door prizes throughout the afternoon. The field consisted of bowlers throughout the area and also included several members of the SFA athletic department such as SFA Director of Athletics Robert Hill.
The host team of Texas Pro Bowl took the tournament title by defeating Nac Attack in the finals, and received bowling balls courtesy of Bowling.com. The winning team consisted of David Sanders, Danny Lilly, Kevin Jurecka and Jim Young.
Some of the other prizes that were given out included a pair of four-ball bowling bags, $50 gas cards, numerous pieces of SFA apparel and other prizes donated from Bowling.com as well.
"I am extremely satisfied with the way things went today, " SFA head bowling coach Laura Cramer said on Sunday. "We had a great turnout this afternoon and everyone was very supportive in trying to get this program off the ground. Our sponsors were great and I want to thank each of them because we could not have put this tournament on without them."
The tournament is scheduled to be an annual event with this year's sponsors for the tournament included Bowling.com, Adkinson Body Repair, Stone Creek Apartments, Days Inn, Herman Power Tire and Texas Pro Bowl who hosted the tournament and will be the host venue when Ladyjack Bowling begins competition.
The SFA athletic department announced the addition of women's bowling to its sport roster in September of 2008, and hired Cramer as head coach less than two months later. The team will begin competition in the 2009-2010 academic year.
