NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – Stephen F. Austin carded the low score of the final round of the Texas State Invitational, shooting a 301 en route to a fourth-place showing. The Ladyjacks closed out the 54-hole event with a 65-over 917, registering their fourth top-five finish of the 2016-17 season.
SFA’s performance was highlighted by sophomore Erica Lautensack who tied for fourth individually with an 8-over 221. Lautensack registered a 1-under 70 over the final round, notching the seventh top-10 finish of her Ladyjack career, matching her seventh career par-or-better round.
Lautensack was joined in the top-20 by senior Jessie White, carding a 15-over 228 to finish tied for 16th overall. White notched her second-straight 6-over 77 over the final round for her 16th career top-20 showing.
Freshman Alexandra Batista registered a 21-over 234, including a 5-over 76 in round three, tying for 36th individually. Fellow freshmen Haleigh Jordan (25-over 238) and Paola Cortes (28-over 241) rounded out the SFA scorecard with senior Courtney Ford registering a 38-over 251 competing as an individual.
After an hour-long rain delay to begin the morning, SFA finally resumed play from the suspended second round and sat fifth following the second 36 holes with a 48-over 616. The Ladyjacks shot a 31-over 315 over the duration of round two, adding 14 strokes to their opening round total, slipping to fifth.
White and Lautensack both carded a 6-over 77 in round two, tying for 14th in the individual standings, followed by Batista’s 12-over 83, sitting tied for 47th individually.
Following the completion of round two, SFA and the rest of the 16-team field went immediately into round three where the Ladyjacks reverted back to their first round form. SFA fired a 17-over 301, the lowest round among the field, settling into their fourth-place finish with the 65-over 917.
SFA was the top Southland Conference team in the field, finishing two shots better than fifth-place Central Arkansas (67-over 919) and 25 shots ahead of 10th-place Houston Baptist (90-over 942). Incarnate Word (93-over 945) tied for 12th while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (97-over 949) finished 14th.
UT-San Antonio pulled away from host Texas State over the final 18 holes to capture the team title with a 49-over 901, five shots better than the Bobcats’ 54-over 906. Georgia Southern (59-over 911) placed third, six shots better than the Ladyjacks, with UCA rounding out the top-five.
With a productive opening tournament now in the books, SFA will turn its attention to March, getting set for a busy month which includes three tournaments. The first of those will take place March 6-7 as the Ladyjacks will head south to McAllen for the UT-Rio Grande Valley Invitational.
