Ladyjacks Place Eighth at Islander Classic

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Stephen F. Austin finished the final round of the 2014 Islander Classic right where it started it. The Ladyjacks fired a 17-over 305 in Tuesday's final round, its third-lowest round of the season, finishing in eighth-place with a 65-over 929.
SFA's 929 over the 54-hole tournament marks the second-lowest tournament score of the season and is the fifth-lowest 54-hole tournament score in program history, edging out the 930 the Ladyjacks shot at the Oral Roberts Shootout last fall.
Sophomore Mackenzie Steiner led the way for SFA over the final 18 holes, tying her career-best with a 1-under 71 over the final round. Steiner finished with a 13-over 229 (80-78-81), tying for 19th overall as she notches the first top-20 finish of her SFA career.
Fellow sophomore Sydney Reed tied for 27th overall after carding a 15-over 231 (75-76-80), three shots better than freshman Piper Kyle's 18-over 234 (76-80-78). Freshman Ann Holcomb posted a 21-over 237 (81-80-76) with senior Aliece Anderson rounding out the Ladyjack scorecard with a 25-over 241 (79-82-80).
Beginning Tuesday's final round in eighth-place, SFA held its ground and defeated ninth-place Sam Houston State (72-over 936) by seven strokes. The Ladyjacks finished six shots back of seventh-place Central Arkansas (59-over 923) and seven strokes behind sixth-place Northern Illinois (58-over 922) .
Southland Conference foe Lamar captured the team title, carding a 28-over 892 and defeating runner-up Houston Baptist (44-over 908) by 16 strokes. Oral Roberts (51-over 915) placed third with Oklahoma City (53-over 917) and North Texas (57-over 921) rounding out the top-five.
With its sixth top-10 finish in the books, SFA prepares for a trip to Mississippi, competing in the Southern Miss Lady Eagle Invitational. The two-day event will take place on March 10-11 in Hattiesburg.
