SUGAR LAND, Texas - Behind a career-low round from freshman Ann Holcomb, Stephen F. Austin sits sixth following the first two rounds of the Houston Baptist Husky Invitational. The Ladyjacks shot a 62-over 638, sitting just two strokes shy of cracking the top-five.
Holcomb opened up the day with a 9-over 71, then shaved six strokes off that total in round two, firing a career-low 3-over 75 and currently sits tied for 14th in the individual standings with a 12-over 156. She leads fellow freshman Piper Kyle by one stroke as Kyle sits in sole possession of 19th with a 13-over 157 (78-79).
Sophomore Sydney Reed is tied for 26th overall with a 17-over 161 (81-80), three shots better than freshman Jessica White's 20-over 164 (81-83). Senior Aliece Anderson rounds out the SFA scorecard with a 26-over 170 (87-83).
A pair of Ladyjacks are competing as individuals, led by sophomore Mackenzie Steiner's 24-over 168 (87-81), followed by sophomore Julia Bazaldua's 25-over 169 (87-82).
Playing on a warm but windy day in the Houston suburb, SFA opened up the 54-hole event with a 33-over 321 in round one, then shaved four strokes off to card a 29-over 638 in round two. The Ladyjacks hold a comfortable seven-stroke lead on Oklahoma City (69-over 645) and enter Tuesday's final round trailing fifth-place Incarnate Word (60-over 636) by two strokes.
Heading into the final 18 holes there currently is a three-way tie atop the team leaderboard with Louisiana-Monroe, Lamar and Central Arkansas all shooting a 43-over 619 through day one. Host Houston Baptist (49-over 625) is in fourth, 11 shots ahead of the fifth-place Cardinals.
Tuesday's final round gets underway at 8:30 a.m. as SFA will be teamed up with Houston Baptist and Incarnate Word, setting up an all-Southland Conference pairing. Full results will be posted at SFAJacks.com as they become available.
