Entering the day in sixth-place, a sluggish opening nine holes had SFA on the brink of slipping down to seventh in the overall team standings. But the four Ladyjacks scorers on the day regrouped to shoot a combined 2-over, finishing one shot back of fourth-place Lamar’s 45-over 897.
The final round charge was led by freshman Alexandra Batista’s even-par 71, tying her career low and finishing tied for sixth individually. Batista opened with a 1-over 36 over the front nine, then carded a 1-under 35 over the back to register her fourth top-10 finish of 2016-17, giving the true freshman a 76.87 scoring average, the third-best in program history. With Batista’s top-10 showing, SFA has now registered a top-10 individual in each of the last four SLC tournaments.
Senior Jessie White closed her SFA career with 1-over 72, finishing in sole possession of 13th with a 10-over 223. After starting the day a 1-under through nine, White posted the 1-over 72 en route to her 18th career top-20 finish. She closes out her Ladyjack career with a team-best 75.70 scoring average in 2016-17, setting a new standard for the lowest single-season average in program history.
The duo was joined in the top-20 by redshirt sophomore Erica Lautensack, who used a 2-over 73 to finish tied for 17th overall with a 13-over 226. After posting a 3-over 38 through the front nine, Lautensack rebounded with a 1-under 35 over the back, registering her sixth top-20 finish of the season and the 16th of her Ladyjack career. She finishes the year with a 77.13 scoring average, the fourth-lowest in program history.
Freshman Haleigh Jordan just missed being the fourth top-20 finisher for SFA, carding a 7-over 78 and finishing tied for 23rd overall with a 16-over 229. Fellow freshman Paola Cortes rounds out the Ladyjack scorecard with a 33-over 246, including a 9-over 80 over the final 18 holes.
The late surge left SFA one stroke shy of matching Lamar for fourth, but gave the Ladyjacks a convincing seven-stroke victory over McNeese (53-over 905). SFA was also able to leapfrog Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, who finished seventh overall with a 57-over 310.
Houston Baptist captured the 2017 Southland Conference Championship with a 29-over 881, outlasting a surging Central Arkansas (30-over 882) by one stroke to capture the team title. Sam Houston State (33-over 885) slipped one spot to finish third with Lamar and SFA rounding out the top-five.
The results brings to a close a successful season for the Ladyjacks, one which saw SFA finish among the team top-10 in 10 of its 11 events on the year. The result at the SLC Championship marks fourth-straight top-five finish at the conference event with both the 46-over and 898 total strokes marking new program-lows.
