Stephen F. Austin heads down to Magnolia, Texas, getting set to compete in the 2014 Southland Conference Championships April 15-17.
The 2014 SLC Championships will be held at the High Meadow Ranch Golf Club, a par-72, 6,258 course in Magnolia. The 54-hole tournament gets underway at 8 a.m. on both Tuesday and Wednesday morning before a 7:30 a.m. start on Thursday for the final 18 holes. SFA will go head-to-head against its nine conference opponents seeking a berth into the NCAA tournament. Lamar is the highest-ranked team in the 10-team field, boasting a GolfStat ranking of 96 heading into the three-day event. Oral Roberts ranks 122 as the duo have both notched three tournament wins on the year with Houston Baptist sitting at 124.
Field (10 teams): Central Arkansas, Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word, Lamar, McNeese State, New Orleans, Oral Roberts, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
The Ladyjacks will more than likely be one of the youngest teams in the tournament field as SFA will compete with three freshmen, a sophomore and a senior. Senior Aliece Anderson will be competing in her fourth and final SLC championship as sophomore Sydney Reed competes in her second. The Ladyjacks will also hope to set a solid tone for the future as freshmen Piper Kyle, Ann Holcomb and Jessica White comprise the remainder of the SFA scorecard.
The weather forecast for the 2014 SLC Championships is shaping up to provide for three solid days of golf. Tuesday is calling for sunny skies with highs in the mid 60s, bumping up to around 70 degrees and sunny on Wednesday. Thursday should have increasing clouds with rain possible in the late morning as winds shouldn’t play much of an issue.
Ladyjacks in the SLC Tournament
SFA will be appearing in the SLC Championship for the fifth time in program history and is seeking its best tournament finish. The Ladyjacks placed eighth in both 2010 and 2011, followed by seventh-place finishes in 2012 and 2013. SFA will also be seeking for its first individual top-20 finish as Wallis Spears (2010) and Marissa Branburg (2011) both placed 21st at the conference tournament.
