NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men and women's golf teams made big strides in the fall of 2013. The teams combined to shave 8.65 strokes from their spring 2012 team averages.

The Lumberjacks lowered their scoring average (295.40) four strokes from the spring semester. Improvement was largely on the shoulders of junior Blake Pugh and sophomore Luke Sheehan. The duo solidified the top positions on the team for the entire fall season, capturing four top-ten finishes combined.

Pugh, a second-team all-conference selection in 2012, led the `Jacks in scoring. He carded two top-ten finishes, and a top-twenty in four of five tournaments. The junior finished with a career-best 73.07 season-scoring average, with a career-best fifth place finish at the HBU Woodforest Invitational.

Sheehan made large improvements to his game since the spring season. The sophomore knocked 3.62 strokes off his scoring average from last spring. Highlights of Sheehan's season came at the SHSU Harold Funston Invitational, where he fired a team-best round of 68 on his way to a seventh place finish.

Although a top finish wasn't the outcome, head coach Trey Schroeder was very pleased with the oncoming of freshman Cory Brown in the season's final tournament.

"Cory was a bright spot for us," Schroeder said. "He really played better than what his score showed. He's our only freshman this year, and I was really impressed with how he handled his first tournament."

The Ladyjacks were led by underclassmen in the fall of 2013, with three of the top five Ladyjack finishers being freshman. SFA improved their season-scoring average (310.45) by four and a half shots from the spring of 2012.

"Five shots is a lot of improvement over the course of a year," Schroeder said. "Especially considering our young team."

The Lumberjacks begin their spring season in Houston at the Rice Intercollegiate, Feb. 17-18.

The Ladyjacks kickoff their spring schedule in Broussard, La, at the McNeese LeTriomphe Collegiate Feb. 9-11.
