NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Chelsea Raymond broke open a 0-0 game with a game-winning goal in the 82nd minute to help SFA down Rice 1-0 Friday evening at the SFA Soccer Field. The victory over Rice marked the first time in school history the Ladyjacks defeated the Owls in six total attempts.

"Tonight was a huge victory for us," SFA head coach Tony Amato said. "Both teams fought extremely hard and we were just hoping we could get the result we deserved and push across a goal late."

The home match was the Ladyjacks first in their last five games and the first since the season-opener against Houston on Aug. 17.

Raymond's goal, her team-leading sixth of the season, came off a beautiful touch pass from senior midfielder Kylie Louw on a 3-on-1 breakdown deep in Rice territory. Raymond collected the pass from nearly 10 yards out and beat Owls' goalkeeper Megan Kinneman to her right. The goal by Raymond marked the fourth consecutive game that the reigning Southland Conference Freshman of the Year has scored a goal.

After getting outshot 5-4 in the first 45 minutes, the Ladyjacks (5-2-0) turned the table in the second half by edging Rice (2-3-1) 8-4 for a total advantage of 12-9. Raymond had had another opportunity to score the game's first goal midway through the second half but her shot hit the right side of the post.

Junior goalkeeper Lacey Lee came up with three critical saves to improve her personal record to 4-2-0 on the season.  The Ladyjacks picked up their fifth shutout of the season and have now outscored their opponents 16-3.

SFA also won the corner kicks battle with a 5-4 advantage.

The Ladyjacks, who lost a tough 2-1 game at LSU on Tuesday, will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 14 when they travel to San Marcos against Texas State for a rematch of last season's SLC Tournament Championship. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
