NATCHITOCHES, La. -
A record-setting day from sophomore Kendra Cannon sparked the Ladyjacks to a victory in the semifinals of the Southland Conference Soccer Championships Friday afternoon. SFA shutout third-seeded Texas State, 2-0, to advance to Sunday's championship game.
After a scoreless first half, the Ladyjacks turned up the offensive pressure in the second half led by the school's all-time scorer. Cannon broke the scoreless tie with her goal in the 73rd minute of the game.
The Ladyjacks held the 1-0 lead until Cannon added a second goal in the83rd minute. The two goals would be enough for sophomore goalkeeper Natascia Michalezki who recorded her sixth shutout of the season. She played 90 minutes and recorded six saves.
Cannon tied six other players for most goals scored in a Southland Conference Tournament game with her two against the Bobcats.
"This was a great performance by our team," said SFA head coach Nicole Nelson. "We played a solid 90 minutes of soccer today. The girls were patient and they capitalized on their opportunities. Texas State is a very good soccer team and I'm very happy with our win today."
The Ladyjacks will play the winner of top-seeded Southeastern Louisiana and fifth-seeded Louisiana-Monroe Sunday. The championship game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
