Soccer Announces 2014 Spring Schedule
Feb. 10, 2014
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin head soccer coach Wally Crittenden announced the release of the upcoming 2014 spring schedule for the Ladyjacks Monday afternoon. The four-game schedule is highlighted by three home games at the SFA Soccer field against TCU, SMU and an alumni game.
"Our 2014 spring schedule continues to build upon the fact that we want to measure ourselves against the best possible competition whenever possible," Crittenden said. "TCU and SMU will come to Nacogdoches with very good teams that I know they will be prepared to compete and challenge all of our players. Navarro has an excellent team and coaching staff and reached the JUCO National Championship Game this past season and ended the year ranked third in the country, so that will serve several purposes in that it will be a good game and will allow us to evaluate their rising 2015 class against our players.
"We end the spring with our Annual Alumni Match that will see players from the past come back to Nacogdoches and share the current state of the program in a relaxed and festive environment. From beginning to end, this schedule gives our players the chance to grow and compete at a level that will be consistent with where we hope to be in the fall."
SFA's four matches will be played across March and April, starting with a visit from TCU on Saturday, Mar. 1.
TCU is coming off a 6-10-3 campaign in which they finished seventh in the Big 12 and were eliminated in the opening round of the conference tournament by second-seeded Texas Tech. The Horned Frogs return two all-conference players from the 2013 squad, in junior defender Bobbi Clemmer and sophomore forward Michelle Prokof.
Following TCU, the Ladyjacks will have two weeks off before their next game on Saturday, Mar. 22, when SFA heads to Corsicana, Texas, to take on Navarro College. The Bulldogs are coming off a 19-4-1 season, advancing all the way to the NJCAA National Championship game in which they fell 3-1 to top-seeded Iowa Western in Melbourne, Florida.
On Sunday, Mar. 30, the Ladyjacks return to their home field to host SMU. The Mustangs ended 2013 with a 9-9-1 overall mark, falling to No. 17 UCF in the American Athletic Conference quarterfinals. SMU returns all three of its all-confernce players in senior forward Shelby Redman, senior midfielder Rikki Clarke and all-rookie team selection Taylor Barg (midfield/defender).
SFA will close its spring schedule with an alumni game on Saturday, Apr. 26, welcoming former Ladyjacks back to Nacogdoches.
Last season under Crittenden, the SLC Coach of the Year, SFA repeated as conference champions for a third-straight season, the first three-peat in program history. The Ladyjacks also tied the mark for most wins in a regular season at 15, setting a new single-season record with 14 of those wins coming via shutout. Under Crittenden's guidance, SFA recorded the first undefeated season on the road (9-0-3), while also ranking among the elite in the nation in both shutout percentage (9-.636) and goals-against average (10-.520).
The Ladyjacks returns two All-SLC players in seniors Chelsea Raymond (forward) and Megan Dunnigan (defender), both of whom were named to the 2013 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire All-Central Region second team, and four players who garnered honorable mention - senior forward Zuri Prince, junior defender Rachel Owens, junior defender Chantal Curry and sophomore defender Brooke Dunnigan.
