SFA Places 140 Student-Athletes on AD Honor Roll
Feb. 23, 2012
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin athletics department honored nearly 170 student-athletes, trainers and managers at halftime of the women's basketball game for being named to the Athletics Director Honor Roll. Of the 170 who received the honor, 140 were student-athletes.
"There is a correlation between success on the field of competition, in the classroom and as an individual," said Director of Academic Student Services Rob McDermand. "These are exceptional numbers, and it is my goal to someday see 50 percent of our student-athletes achieve and attain at least a 3.0 grade-point average, not only for a semester, but throughout their careers."
To receive AD Honor Roll recognition an athlete must maintain a 3.0 GPA. Among the nearly 140 student-athletes who were honored at the game, 77 received Dean's List (3.5 GPA) and 31 were named to the President's List (4.0). Eleven different sports were represented by an athlete with a 4.0 GPA led by soccer with six, and football with five. The Lumberjack baseball, golf and track and field teams, in addition to the Ladyjack cross country, volleyball, bowling, softball, tennis and women's track and field team were also represented by at least one student-athlete on the President's List.
"We all know student-athletes are recruited to help their respective sport win a championship," said McDermand. "But everyone of our coaches will tell you that their main goal is seeing athletes walk across the stage to receive their diploma. That is the ultimate championship."
