Soccer Reports For Fall Camp
Aug. 6, 2009
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team reported for fall camp Thursday afternoon with just five days until its first competition of the 2009 season. That time crunch may be compressed even further by the large contingent of newcomers dotting this year's roster. Thirty-one players arrived on campus Thursday, only 13 of whom are returners.
"This is probably one of the largest groups of newcomers I've ever had," SFA head coach George Van Linder said. "A little more than half the players coming in are first-year players -- either freshmen or transfers."
Following residence hall check-in Thursday afternoon, the players were scheduled for a team dinner in the evening. Workouts will commence Friday with morning and evening training sessions and team meetings in the afternoon. SFA is set to host SMU, one of Van Linder's former teams, Tuesday in the season's first exhibition game. The contest is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
Van Linder said the high number of newcomers will slightly alter the content of team meetings, at least during the early going.
"We'll spend a little more time getting to know each other and have a slower pace when we're reviewing everything and trying to teach everyone how we want to play," the coach said.
SFA will host Houston Baptist in an exhibition contest on Aug. 15 before opening the season on the road against Louisiana-Lafayette on Aug. 23.
