TULSA, Oklahoma - A goal by Tulsa's Rebecca Handley in the opening minutes of Friday's match at the Tulsa Invitational proved to be just enough to get by Stephen F. Austin Friday evening as the Golden Hurricane denied the Ladyjacks their first win in 2011 with a 1-0 victory.
"It was a hard fought game," SFA head coach Tony Amato said. "We made some mistakes that we need to improve on in order to win these type of games. Give credit to Tulsa. They worked hard and got the result tonight."
Handley's first goal of the season came just nearly three minutes into the game when she sailed a shot past SFA goalkeeper Lacey Lee from 12 yards away. Tulsa (2-0-0) outshot SFA (0-2-0) 16-12 and 9-5 shots on goal.
For a second straight game, Laura Sadler led the Ladyjacks with four shots, followed by Chelsea Raymond's three, all of which were on goal. Lee, who dropped to 0-2, had a career-high eight saves on the evening.
Tulsa goalkeeper Katie Bykowski improved to 2-0 and recorded five saves on the night. The Golden Hurricane improved to 3-1-1 all-time against the Ladyjacks.
SFA will look to break their skid on Sunday when they face Oral Roberts at 1:05 p.m. from the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium from the University of Tulsa. The Golden Eagles (1-1-0) defeated Sam Houston State 3-2 Friday evening.
