This Week: The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team will look to continue their winning ways this weekend when they play two more Southland Conference matches, beginning at Southeastern Louisiana on Friday, Oct. 18, followed by Nicholls State at home on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m.
Game 15: at Southeastern Louisiana (Scouting Report): The Ladyjacks are 15-9-7 all-time against the Southeastern Louisiana and have defeated the Lady Lions in each of their last two meetings dating back to 2011. SELU is currently riding a three-game winning streak into Friday’s pivotal showdown. Both schools currently rank atop the conference with 6-1 marks in SLC play.
Game 16: vs. Nicholls State (Scouting Report): SFA is 20-1-2 all-time against the Colonels and will ride an eight-game winning streak against NICH into Sunday’s match. The Colonels are coming off a 2-1 victory over Central Arkansas that secured their first double-digit winning season and first overall winning season in program history. The victory was the program’s first over the Sugar Bears since they joined the conference in 2006.
RPI RISE: The Ladyjacks come in at No. 62 in the latest RPI rankings, moving up one spot from No. 63 last week.
Best Start In School History: With the win against Abilene Christian, the Ladyjacks are off to their best 14-game start in school history (11-2-1). The 2013 SFA squad passed the mark 9-2-1 set back in 2011 with their 2-0 win over McNeese State.
#SouthlandStrong: The Ladyjacks have won 25 of their last 26 regular season Southland Conference matches dating back to the 2010 season and have gone a combined 23-1-0 the past two-plus seasons.
Dunnigan Named SLC Defensive Player of the Week: Following their sixth straight victory, all of which have been shutouts, Stephen F. Austin junior defender Megan Dunnigan was honored on Tuesday, Oct. 15, by being named the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Dunnigan, a native of Round Rock, Texas (Vista Ridge HS), anchored the Ladyjack defense to two shutouts on the week with 2-0 conquests over both McNeese State and Abilene Christian. The junior played a big role in helping SFA to its league-leading 10th and 11th shutouts on the season. In the two matches, SFA only surrendered 10 shots on goal, while Dunnigan assisted on the game-winning goal against ACU in the seventh minute of play. Dunnigan is a vital part of the SFA defense that currently leads the nation with a .786 shutout percentage. The award is Dunnigan's second this season.
A New Era is Born: On Jan. 28, 2013, former Texas A&M assistant Wally Crittenden was named the eighth Stephen F. Austin head soccer coach in school history. Crittenden replaces Tony Amato who stepped down last December to become the head coach at the University of Arizona. Crittenden has spent the past three seasons in College Station assisting a nationally ranked Texas A&M team that has recorded a combined 52-16-6 (.743) record.
Picked To Click: Once again the Ladyjacks were picked to win the 2013 Southland Conference regular-season championship in polls conducted by the league’s coaches and sports information directors. It marks the third consecutive year the Ladyjacks have been selected to finish first in the Southland in either one of the two polls. SFA received 11 first-place votes in both the coaches and SID’s polls to earn a total of 143 points in each poll.
Title Town: The SFA women’s soccer program has brought an unprecedented seven Southland Conference regular-season championships back to Nacogdoches. That total is nearly half of the 15 possible regular-season titles in SLC Soccer history.
