TEMPE, Arizona – The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team picked up a 2-1 victory over San Diego State, before falling 8-1 to No. 5 Oregon Friday afternoon in the Kajikawa Classic at the Tempe Sports Complex.

SFA (1-2) will play two more games Saturday to close out the tournament. The ‘Jacks will square off against Creighton at 10 a.m. (CT), before facing Boise State at 5:30 p.m.

    Game 1: SFA 2, SDSU 1

Junior Carlie Thomas (1-1) emerged victorious in a pitcher’s duel against a platoon from SDSU (1-1), earning her first victory of the season, in a one-run, two-hit complete game. Thomas recorded four strikeouts and one walk in the effort.

The ‘Jacks overall doubled the offensive production of the Aztecs, outhitting the opponent 6-3, highlighted by junior Cadie Weaver who finished three-for-four. The Splendora, Texas, native, finished with a home run, two singles and two RBI.

SFA took an early lead to open the game, with Weaver’s solo shot, with one out, to go up 1-0 in the top of the first. But the ‘Jacks would not hold the lead for long, as SDSU capitalized on two SFA errors to even the score 1-1 in the bottom of the second. Junior Lorena Bauer reached base to open the frame on an error from freshman Lindsay Campbell. Pinch runner Danielle O’Toole would come around to score three batters later on an error from third baseman Taylor Wells.

With two runners on and one outs, the ‘Jacks threatened to retake the lead their next time to the plate. Weaver singled to right field off of O’Toole (0-1), before pinch runner Brittany Lee advanced to second on a single through the left side from sophomore Shalie Day. O’Toole would keep SFA off the board however, inducing back-to-back groundballs from junior Elizabeth Arana and senior Bethany Brown to end the inning.

Thomas would hold Aztecs scoreless the rest of the way, retiring 14 of the remaining 18 batters faced in the circle.

The ’Jacks would retake the lead in the top of the seventh, off of an RBI single from Weaver to plate freshman Rylie Chappell, to win 2-1.

    Game 2: No. 5 UO 8, SFA 1

After a scoreless first inning from either team, UO (2-0) erupted for four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-0 lead. With two outs and a runner on second, the Ducks got a single to right field from sophomore Jamie Sullivan to plate freshman Janelle Lindvall. Following three consecutive UO singles, senior Angela White (0-2) got a ground out from Kaylan Howard to end the inning.

The Ducks would tack on two more runs in the top of the third, before SFA scored its lone run of the game. The ’Jacks cashed in on a three SFA hits, highlighted by Arana’s single to right field to score freshman Alisa Hamilton.

The ‘Jacks would only manage one more hit off starter Karissa Hovinga (1-0), as the OU added two runs in the top of the seventh to cap off an 8-1 victory.
