SFA Clips Islanders in Extra Innings
Feb. 10, 2007
WACO, Texas - Eager to wash the taste of two straight losses out of its mouth, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team had to wait until the last game of the evening Saturday at the Baylor Getterman Classic. And then the Ladyjacks had to wait a little longer. SFA went to extra innings before scoring four runs in the ninth to knock off Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 9-5.
The win is SFA's second in the opening weekend of play and evens the Ladyjacks' record at 2-2. SFA will wrap up play in the Getterman Classic Sunday with an 11 a.m. rematch against Southern Miss, the team the Ladyjacks defeated, 12-4, in the opener on Friday.
SFA did all its scoring in the decisive ninth inning with two outs. Heather Hebert was forced out at home on a bases-loaded ground ball for the second out of the inning. But the next batter, Crystal Dahlquist sent a two-RBI single to right field and took second on the throw. Chelsea Carr and Ashley Wilburn scored on the play. Jessica Tullos wiped the bases clean with a triple to right in the next at-bat, setting the final score.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi put runners at the corners with no outs to lead off the bottom half of the inning, but SFA recorded three outs in succession to end the threat. Wilburn (2-2) worked the final two innings to earn the win, giving the freshman pitcher each of the first four decisions for the Ladyjacks this season. She allowed just one hit and recorded two strikeouts in facing seven batters.
Kari Hugie started for SFA and lasted seven innings before giving way to Wilburn for the extra frames. She gave up five runs -- only two of which were earned -- on eight hits and struck out one.
The Islanders put up an unearned run in the second inning, and scored again in the fifth, but not before the Ladyjacks added two more runs in the top half. Carr led off that frame with a double to left, then pinch runner Candise Juarez scored on a single up the middle by Hugie. Michele Huffman ran for Hugie and score three batters later when Dahlquist doubled to right-center.
A&M-Corpus tied the score with a pair of runs on two hits and an error in the sixth inning and each team added a tally in the eighth before SFA won it in the ninth.
Dahlquist was 3-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored for SFA. Briana Bishop went 2-for-3 and drove in a run. Higgs, Tullos, Carr, Hugie and Wilburn added a hit apiece, and Tullos finished with two RBI.
