DENTON, Texas – Freshman catcher Katelyn Standley pounded three home runs on Friday to help take the Ladyjacks to a pair of victories at the Texas Shootout hosted by North Texas. Standley hit 6-for-7 with nine RBI over the two games to notch wins over Sam Houston State and Prairie View A&M.
Standley hit a grand slam in the first game of the day against the Bearkats to put the Ladyjacks on top in the fifth inning. With Stephen F. Austin trailing 5-4, after her teammates had already posted one run on three hits and a fielder’s choice, Standley belted the ball over the left field fence to go on top and eventually win 8-6.
In SFA’s second game of the day, Standley hit 3-for-4 with five RBI and three runs scored to again play a key role in the 9-4 win over Prairie View A&M. Standley had a pair of dingers this time. She hit a two-run blast in the third inning to go up 3-1 and then hit a shot to left again to drive in three more runs.
SFA (5-7) tallied 10 hits in both contests Friday as the offense provided the spark for the wins.
On the rubber Brittany Lewis and Carlie Thomas got the wins. Thomas also got a save in the win over Sam Houston State.
"It was a really good day today. To come from behind against Sam Houston like that says a lot about our team," said Head Coach Gay McNutt. "We had freshmen step up at the plate again for us, and our pitchers came away with some good wins. I'm excited about the way we played."
Lewis got the job done at the plate as well. The freshman hit 2-for-3 with two runs and a three-run homer. Against Prairie View, Lewis hit 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action on Saturday at the Texas Shootout with games against Abilene Christian and host North Texas. First pitch against ACU is 1 p.m. and SFA faces the Mean Green at 5 p.m.
