NACOGDOCHES, Texas -
Stephen F. Austin scored three runs in the first behind a Jessica Tullos home run, and Monika Covington made it stand up as the Ladyjacks knocked off Sam Houston State, 3-0, Tuesday in the Southland Conference opener for both teams.
SFA improved to 10-3 on the season and 1-0 in SLC action, while the Bearkats fell to 6-5 overall and 0-1 in league play.
The Ladyjacks got all the runs they needed in the first, when Jessica Tullos mashed a monster two-run shot into the tree-tops beyond the left field wall.
After Covington retired the side in order in the top of the first, SFA leadoff batter Benet Higgs singled to left field. Kendal Harper moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt, then Higgs took third on a stolen base. She came home when the next batter, Kim Daley, reached on an error by the shortstop.
Tullos made the error sting in the next at-bat when she blasted her second home run of the season.
Covington cruised through the next four innings, allowing just two hits and a walk in that stretch with only one runner advancing past first base. In the sixth, Sam Houston got a two-out double, followed by a single to put runners at the corners. Covington got the next batter to pop out to center field, ending the threat, then retired the Bearkats in order in the seventh to pick up the win.
Covington (6-1) allowed four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts.
Tullos finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI. Higgs, Harper and Ashley Struchtemeyer each hit safely once in the game.
The series will resume Wednesday with a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
